Summary

The Empire stands triumphant.

For twenty years the Dread Empress has ruled over the lands that were once the Kingdom of Callow, but behind the scenes of this dawning golden age threats to the crown are rising. The nobles of the Wasteland, denied the power they crave, weave their plots behind pleasant smiles. In the north the Forever King eyes the ever-expanding borders of the Empire and ponders war. The greatest danger lies to the west, where the First Prince of Procer has finally claimed her throne: her people sundered, she wonders if a crusade might not be the way to secure her reign. Yet none of this matters, for in the heart of the conquered lands the most dangerous man alive sat across an orphan girl and offered her a knife.

Her name is Catherine Foundling, and she has a plan.

A Practical Guide to Evil is a YA fantasy novel about a young girl named Catherine Foundling making her way through the world – though, in a departure from the norm, not on the side of the heroes. Is there such a thing as doing bad things for good reasons, or is she just rationalizing her desire for control? Good and Evil are tricky concepts, and the more power you get the blurrier the lines between them become.

Well it really depends on what you consider a tragedy, technically every plot point is a tragedy is in this book but the magnitude differs each time

Why are people acting so unusual when the mc is a female? It’s not like they’re imagining themselves to be the mc in other male mc novels? Right…

Im male, and I love female protagonists... But it has to be action fantasy, and no sappy love interest, unless they are actually a good character to begin with. But I read these cause I love the genre and they usually write the female protagonist differently than how normal male protagonists are (Since they are usually dark and brooding, or feel like the weight of the world is on their back) as opposed to females who are more light hearted and only focused on the ones they care about, (also more cold hearted)

I don't care about the gender of the main character as long as they are well written, but I do prefer male main characters as I do enjoy projecting myself over them sometimes. (I have very low standards)

I'm a girl, and I feel the same. 😭 I used to not mind whatever gender the protagonist of the novel I'm reading. I have read books with female MC like Hunger Games, Throne of Glass, and Skyward before, and even Six of Crows that switches POV between six characters (I love this book so much, and loved all the characters). But after falling into the rabbit hole called webnovel, I just couldn't go back to how I used to before. It's probably because most protagonists I've read are males. I used to read any genre as long as it's good, now, I can't even stand romance. Webnovel really f*ck*d me up.

It's pretty amazing. Don't let the female MC steryotypes fool you, this novel is a lot more western than most, and the view on that really shows. Also, from the general lack of padding with few exceptions, this felt more like a book than typical web novels, and the quality is good enough that i would not mind having physical books on my shelf. Highly recommend.
